Grianadhmad

Species: child of Autumn (called dryad by other races)
Class: earth scholar
Gender: neutral, male-presenting

Grianadhmad, meaning "sun timber," was born in one of the last years before Fortannis' recorded history began, in a Children of Autumn grove called Ithir·den·Speir atop Talún Mount, a mesa somewhere on the landmass now called The Forgotten Lands. At the time that Grianadhmad was born, the Children of Autumn had already begun surrending the care of the forests to the high elves, and half of the population of Ithir·den·Speir were the last still-awake representatives of the Forgotten Lands' other groves, joining forces to oversee the transition to the high elves' custodianship.

Grianadhmad was just over 187 cóicigsa (almost 31 years) old when the entire "last grove" drifted into the Great Sleep and he became tree-like for an immeasurable amount of time. Looking back from the present day, Grianadhmad originally believed that in the current calendar, his old grove existed even before the First Myriad (first ten thousand years of the Evendarrian Reckoning calendar). However, recent events have caused him to hypothesise that the Children of Autumn were not as old a race as they once believed themselves to be.

Regardless of the exact timeframe, at multiple points during the Great Sleep, the Mists that drifted timelessly across Fortannis interrupted the Forgotten Lands just as much as on any other continent. Additionally, however, a spell gone awry in the Second Myriad in the year 10608 ᴇʀ (1008 Valdanian Reckoning or ᴠʀ) caused another more volatile type of Mist to specifically cover and shatter the Forgotten Lands into innumerable miniscule "Mist islands." Travelling the Mists became more chaotic and unpredictable than before, so by the time Grianadhmad awoke within the Mists, it was uncertain where in relation to Talún Mount he had been moved.

The date was reckoned as 18 Deiridh-teas of 10617 ᴇʀ (1017 ᴠʀ) when Grianadhmad was awoken by a vision from the Great Ent, directing him out of the Mists to the nearby bivouac of "Ardic" where adventurers from another Mist continent called Valdanis had been magically brought over and. In following the vision, Grianadhmad and his new adventurer allies freed the embodiment of Hope from an artificial heart in the middle of the Heartwood Grove of dryades, although the loss of protection that Hope had conferred contributed to the subsequent destruction of much of the Heartwood in a fire set by the Malachari stone elves that were besieging the grove.

Grianadhmad was instrumental in resettling the exiled Heartwood Children of Autumn into three primary nearby groves - most of the dryades in the Ashdown Wood (under an agreement with its Grove Maiden, Asher), some of the old and injured in the Bulegoan Wood (by invitation of the Healers Grove there), and a particular pacifist quarter in the Apiazak Wood (with the blessing of its spiritualist dryade leaders). He also was given partial patronage as a scribe by Si Sunseeker, one of the Lord Councillors of the Elorian Empire which possessed most of the continent as its vassal states.

While coordinating relief efforts between the adventurers of Ardic and miscellaneous benefactors from Eloria, Grianadhmad celebrated the dryade festival of The Birth with the Exiles in the Ashwood and subsequently ended up pollinating one of the Heartwood natives named Dusk. The following Leá-uisce (10618 ᴇʀ / 1018 ᴠʀ), the seed that Grianadhmad and Dusk produced sprouted into a beautiful young sapling which they named Hálainndóchas, meaning "beautiful hope" in Grianadhmad's old Speirian tongue.

The birth of his daughter cemented Grianadhmad's connexion to the Heartwood Exiles. With the assistance of certain close friends he made among the adventurers in Ardic, foremost among them an elven squire by the name of Saro, Grianadhmad began to search for ways to restore and reclaim the Heartwood, whose rotted and burnt remains had freed or attracted a group of Fae calling themselves the Dread Court under the guardianship of Prince Tor. By dint of another vision from the Great Ent, Grianadhmad learned that he could retrieve a true Heartseed and, by bonding with it, replant it in the Heartwood and become the forest's new Grove Master.

Taking the temporary name Griancroíaimsitheoir ("sun's heartseeker"), he and several friends undertook a trial by full moon and travelled to the ethereal echo of the First Forest to retrieve the Heartseed, which had the side effect of tethering Griancroíaimsitheoir to the forest fae realm and enhancing his healing skills. Going further, he set aside his misgivings about the Dread Court and met with Prince Tor to discuss peace talks and coexistence, beginning to build a foundation whereby the Dread Court and the Heartwood Children of Autumn could share the Grove once at least part of it was restored.

While preparing for the restoration of the Heartwood, Grianadhmad had also been protective of the Exiles in Ashwood, as well as trying to help protect the Ashwood's Grove Maiden Asher. A splinter group of the Exiles, dubbed the "Militants," had only known warfare since their awakening shortly before the Malachari attack on the Heartwood, and were intent on conquering the Ashwood as their own new home. Grianadhmad and his adventuring allies continued to try to keep Asher and the Ashwood independent while they prepared the Exiles for their eventual journey home.

A month after the Birth, Grianadhmad, Halainndochas, and several of the adventurers returned to the Heartwood Briar and underwent an additional test from the Great Ent in the process of planting the new Heartseed. He was rewarded for his patience with the quick emergence of a double sprout, one brilliant verdant green and one a dark near-black. That same evening, however, while assisting his friends from Ardic with a campaign against their foe the Whisperer, his friend and mentor Lady Ahlana sacrificed herself to permanently entomb the Whisperer outside of space and time.

With the realisation that his responsibility to the Exiles was grown greater, coupled with his immense grief at the loss of Ahlana, Grianadhmad determined he would remain with the Exiles or with the Heartseed sproutling for several seasons, distancing himself from the adventuring community he had come to see as insular and prejudiced. He returned deep into the forest groves, not wanting to see any but his dryad and Fae companions.
