A Word on Pronunciations

This guide uses the International Phonetic Alphabet for its pronunciation cipher. Most of the "foreign" words I use in both chapters are pretty self-explanatory, and a lot of letters have their common English pronunciations (i.e. f as in food, g as in goat, etc.). However, there are eight (nine) in particular that might give you some trouble if you are unfamiliar with IPA - either the symbols are not frequently seen, or there are sounds that are very similar and need to be defined separately from each other:

Telling Time

adaig /ə ˈdaɡ/, pl. adaga /-aː/ : a period from one sunset to the next (a day)
aimser /ˈam ʃɛɾ/, pl. aimsra /ˈam sɾə/ : a period of four cóicigsa
cóiciges /koː ˈkɪɡ ɛs/, pl. cóicigsa /koː ˈkɪɡ saː/ : a period of fifteen adaga
dată /ˈda tə/, pl. dăți /ˈdə tsi/ : a period from one midnight to the next (a day)
ghurry /ˈɡur ri/ : a 60th part of a dată (24 minutes)
lustre /ˈlus tre/ : a period of sixty-six piszots (about five years)
móimint /ˈmoː mɪnt/, pl. móminta /-aː/ : the 30th part of a taoide (90 seconds)
nundine /ˈnun din/ : a period of nine dăți
piszot /ˈpis zot/ : a period of 28 dăți
taoide /ˈtiː dɛ/, pl. taoida /ˈtiː daː/ : the 32nd part of an adaig (45 minutes)

Measuring Distance

céim /ˈceːm/, pl. céma /-aː/ : a length of 9 troighda (2¼ metre)
leghe /ˈle ge/ : a length of 4200 verstăs (4368 kilometres / 2714 miles)
míle /ˈmiː lɛ/, pl. míla /ˈmiː laː/ : a length of 30 péirsa (2025 metres / 1¼ miles)
palmă /ˈpal mə/ : a length on an adult's spread hand from pinky tip to thumb tip (25 centimetres / 9⅞ inches)
péirse /ˈpeːɾ sɛ/, pl. péirsa /ˈpeːɾ saː/ : a length of 30 céma (67½ metres)
stânjen /ˈstɨn ʒen/ : a length of 8 palmăs (2 metres / 6½ feet)
troighid /ˈtɾəid/, pl. troighda /-aː/ : a length of an average adult's foot (25 centimetres / 9⅞ inches)
verstă /ˈver stə/ : a length of 520 stânjens (1040 metres / 1137⅓ yards)

Races of Fortannis

barbarian ⁽ᴬᴿᴮ ¹·³⁾ : one of a race of nomadic anthropoids who live off the land in tribal communes
biata : one of a race of avianoids with feathery eyebrows and hair and occasionally gryphon-like claws, who are very traditional and orderly
child of autumn : one of a race of plantlike anthropoids who demonstrate physiological traits of both flora and fauna
dark elf : one of a race of diaftoids with jet black skin and white or silver hair, who are dedicated to their honour
dryad : the word other races typically use to name a child of autumn
dryade : Grin's accidental but frequent misspelling of the other races' term "dryad"
dwarf : one of a race of sturdy bearded anthropoids who typically live in mountainous regions and are meticulous and proud
elf : one of a common race of long-lived diaftoids with a typically scholarly culture, who follow the patterns of natural events
high ogre : one of a race of prognathic anthropoids with yellow skin, who live for good combat and disapprove of weakness
high orc : one of a race of prognathic anthropoids with green skin, who are typically combative, blunt, and tactless
hobling : one of a race of generally diminutive anthropoids with very bushy sideburns, who love comfort and entertainment
mystic wood elf ⁽ᴬᴿᴮ ¹·³⁾ : see sylvanborn
mywe ⁽ᴬᴿᴮ ¹·³⁾ : a common abbreviated term for a mystic wood elf
oathsworn ⁽ᴬᴿᴮ ²·⁰⁾ : one of a race of semi-nomadic anthropoids connected to their bond to the earth by the rocky bone-like protrustions on their heads; also the plural form
sarr ⁽ᴬᴿᴮ ¹·³⁾ : one of a race of felinoids who have excellent senses and a bloodthirst for combat
selunari : one of a race of semi-nomadic anthropoids connected to one another by sela, which exudes from their skin in the form of gemlike growths; also the plural form
stone elf : one of a race of diaftoids with white skin and black lips, who show no emotion and pride themselves on their mental discipline
sylvanborn ⁽ᴬᴿᴮ ²·⁰⁾ / mystic wood elf ⁽ᴬᴿᴮ ¹·³⁾ : one of a race of diaftoids which also sport satyrion horns, who are naturally curious and crafty
wylderkin : one of several races of anthropomorphous bipeds who typically live as solitary survivalists and tend to be uncivilised; also the plural form

Other Important Names and Terms

Çerhêni /tʃer ˈhen i/ : the name of Ilarion's shortsword; means "Starlight" in the deórsa dialect
Dszeni /dᶤ ˈʃen i/ : the name of Ilarion's dagger; means "Stinger" in the deórsa dialect
eshdir/ešdir /ˈeʃ dir/ : a selunari word for any other race of beings
familia /fa ˈmil ja/ : a selunari word for any selunari whether blood or stranger
fierări /ˈfʸe rə ri/ : a caravan's primary craftsman, usually a blacksmith and woodcrafter able to make quick repairs to wagons and harnesses
fine /ˈfɪ nə/ : a clan, either of kin or of like craft
Fort Heartseeker, or Dúnán Hartlorgthaóir /ˌduː naːn ˈhaɾt lɔɾɡ hɛ ˌoːɾ/ : a redoubt built by the Malachari northeast of the Heartwood out of some of its peripheral timbers in advance of the siege against the original Heart of the Forest; used briefly by Elorian Empire troops after the Malachari departed, and since then reclaimed by the Heartwood
great sleep : a period of time in late ancient history when the children of autumn turned over care of the forests to the elves, circumplanted themselves within trees, and fell into an extended state of unconsciousness
Grianadhmad /ˈgrɪn əi ˌˠmad̪/ : Grin's true full name, meaning "sun's branch" in Speirian
Griancroíaimsitheoir /ˌgrɪŋ ˈkriːm ˠʃjoːɾˠ/ : Grin's temporary questing name, meaning "sun's heartseeker" in Speirian
Hálainndóchas /ˌhaː l̪an̪ ˈd̪ˠoː xasˠ/ : Grin's daughter by a Heartwood Exile, whose name means "beautiful hope" in Speirian
hǝyvǝ́yákurkô /hej ˌvej ə ˈkur ko/ : a wildsman or animal tamer; often someone who prefers living among wild beasts instead of people
kishaj /ˈki ʃəi/ : a phosphorescent sand-like grain used in stonecrafting to represent sela, but does not have any magical properties
Malakari / Malachari /ˌma lə ˈxa ɾi/ : the stone elf culture-state of the Elorian Empire
marmosi /ˈmar mo si/ : a caravan's primary guardian, usually a swordmaster or other seasoned warrior
Rupratyi /rup ˈrat ji/ : the name of the silvered longsword smithed for Ilarion by Rock; means "Silvernight" in the deórsa dialect
scríbhneoir /ˈskriv nor/ : a professional copyist or public writer, usually a calligrapher
sela : a deep empathic essence said to be imparted to the selunari by the blessing of the constellations
šerogada /ˌʃe ro ˈga də/ : traditional headscarf worn by Deorsa adults
toktari /ˈtok ta ri/ : a caravan's primary healer, usually a practised physician and educated herbalist
